CHAPTER 7

The Timing of Prophetic Words

A man hath joy by the answer of his mouth: and a word spoken in due season [time], how good is it! (Proverbs 15:23).

Iwant to concentrate on the second part of the verse above, “a word spoken in due season.” Season here means time. Prophetic words might be true but given out of season (time). Sometimes, the word prophesied is not meant to be released until a later date. I’ve seen a number of people misguided by ill-timed prophetic words. These types of words end up blocking destiny instead of propelling the hearer forward. Words given out of season can derail a person’s destiny. They’re very likely to walk into something they’re unprepared for due to a lack of experience and wisdom.

At times, I released a prophetic word too early, and the person wasn’t ready for it. When this happens, demonic activity increases in the recipient’s life. The attacks intensify because of the prophetic words that were released. I’ve seen this many times and have learned to release what God says to release and keep what the Lord says to keep. Immature prophetic people sometimes believe that you’re supposed to release every word that God gives you. Not true! At times, God would have you pray it rather than say it. In other words, you might be prophesying to a person when suddenly you see something terrible, such as illness, death, etc. The words of a prophet of God establish things and carry great weight. They have a tendency to manifest. As prophetic people, we must ask the Lord for permission to release these words during these times. The Lord might say, “No, I want you to pray it, not say it.”

Prayer can be an extremely powerful tool to alter the person’s present situation. In fact, it’s one of the most neglected tools in the believer’s arsenal! We must remember, prayer changes things, but prophecy has the ability to reset what has been changed. When you give prophetic words from the Lord, the person might receive a fresh start or outlook. This may confirm changes recently garnered through prayer and realign attitudes concerning faith. This will help them when receiving prayer concerning life-altering situations that the prophet did not address. We must always be the Master’s mouthpiece, willing to speak or hold back as He commands. Words shouldn’t be spoken based on chronological time but on the Lord’s time. Please make sure you’re on God’s kairos (His time, Strong’s #G2540) and not your chronos (your chronological time, Strong’s #G5550) when releasing His word. Isaiah 50:4 tells us, “The Lord God hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary: he wakeneth morning by morning, he wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned.” In order to say what He wants us to say, we must be able to recognize His voice.

Once we know God’s voice, we’re able to discern His timing.
